Auroras Expected to Appear Overhead This Week

High Likelihood of Display North of Vancouver, Moderate Chance Near Canada

A dramatic blast from the sun has set off a geomagnetic storm on Earth, which could lead to the northern lights being visible as far south as Alabama.

Weather permitting, northern lights displays could be visible directly overhead in many northern areas. Metro Vancouverites could see an awe-inspiring northern lights display early this week.

The northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, are a natural light display in the sky primarily visible at high latitude regions (around the Arctic and Antarctic). They are caused by the interaction of charged particles from the magnetosphere with the Earth's atmosphere.

The best time to see the northern lights is during the winter months, when the nights are longer and the skies are darker. However, they can be seen at any time of year if the conditions are right.

You may be in for a treat if you look up at the sky this week, as the northern lights could be visible as far south as Alabama.
